Gretha Fievre embodies what it truly means to be a changemaker. A builder, mobilizer and unifier, she is a proven changemaker dedicated to empowering the health and health education of Haitians in New York and in Haiti. As a builder, Gretha has been responsible for aiding several health organizations such as the Haitian American Nurses Association and Progressive Community Center for Children and Families in their efforts to promote health care initiatives for the Haitian community. At Progressive Community Center for Children and Families, an educational cooperative organization, Gretha dedicates many hours as a clinical coordinator ensuring that the Center runs efficiently and that Haitians in the community have access to viable clinical resources for all of their health concerns.
In addition to her efforts in New York, Gretha has been responsible for strengthening her hometown community in Haiti through her numerous humanitarian efforts. Her presence in Saint Marc has not gone unnoticed, as she has consistently returned to build homes for families and sponsor education expenses for young adults. Most notably, she has lent her nursing expertise to the Leogane Nursing School teaching young nursing students. Today, Gretha’s builder qualities have exponentially grown as she embarks on building a nursing school in Haiti, the first initiative of her nonprofit organization, HEAL Haiti. Since 2010, Gretha has been tirelessly working to improve the education of young adults by starting this nonprofit organization intended to serve as a health education hub for the community.
As a mobilizer and unifier, Gretha has strengthened the way in which her colleagues and friends engage in Haitian community efforts. Gretha has been influential in bridging various networks to participate in HEAL Haiti as well as participate in local health events. This past spring, her organizing role for the Community Wide Health Initiative earned glowing reviews from City agencies and officials. Coordinating events and
running her organization, Gretha has adapted the idea of Haitian empowerment through the mobilization of Haitian professionals. In the aftermath of the earthqua’ke during her disaster relief efforts in Haiti, Gretha’s leadership successfully called for volunteers and locals alike to mobilize their efforts and aid in the recovery process of those who were deeply wounded. News of this work was so impressive that her employer, Queens Hospital Center, honored her at their Haitian Heritage Month Celebration earlier this year.
